Join in the fun! - Summer and Winter

Anything can happen in Talkeetna! Locals and visitors alike cheer on ball games, join impromptu music jams, enjoy berry and wildflower picking, cross country ski down by the rivers, and make ice candles.

End of the Road, Beginning of the Adventure

Talkeetna is exciting and fun to visit. Mountain climbers from all over the world come to Talkeetna to challenge Mount McKinley, adding an international flavor to our town. After registering with the National Park Service, most fly to the Kahiltna Glacier Base Camp, located at an elevation of 7200 feet. Scenic flights by local air services give visitors the thrill of seeing North America's tallest mountain up close. Many flights have the option to land on the glacier.

World class fishing for rainbow trout and salmon draws many anglers to Talkeetna. Take a river boat tour or take a float trip in a raft to explore 200 miles of beautiful river. Bears, beavers, bald eagles, and moose are frequently seen on the river banks. Take a guided hiking tour and explore Talkeetna and its wild and vast surroundings!

Talkeetna is a unique small rural community similar to that of the one portrayed on the Northern Exposure TV program. It has interesting, diverse and educational museums for you to enjoy. In addition, Talkeetna has accommodations that are open year-round, from campground and RV Parks, B & B' s and guest cabins, to modern motels and lodges.

Legends, lore and history abound in Talkeetna. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Discover fascinating stories of Talkeetna's past, Mt. McKinley climbers, and frontier living on a walking tour of the town. Many artisans, crafters and musicians make this their home. Gift and souvenir shopping is available seven days a week year round. There are also kennels that offer dog team rides with or even without snow! Iditarod teams and expert mushers are available.

Winter in Talkeetna

Come visit Talkeetna in the wintertime. Often we have more snow than the cities of Anchorage and of Wasilla. Popular winter activities are cross country skiing, snowshoeing, dog mushing and also snow machining just a short drive north off Peterville Road in nearby Trapper Creek. In the evenings, enjoy Northern Lights, or just relax by the fire with a good book from our public library or from one of the bookstores – it's a great way to spend a winter day.
